North Mississippi Allstars
Hernando, Mississippi (USA) - 1996
North Mississippi Allstars is a blues rock, southern rock, jam, and hill country blues band from North Mississippi, which has a different structure to that of most bands found in the Delta.
NMA is made up of the Dickinson brothers, Luther (guitar and vocals) and Cody (drums, keyboard), and Chris Chew (bass).
Luther and Cody’s father was the legendary Memphis musician and record producer, Jim Dickinson, who has worked for Ry Cooder, Bob Dylan, The Rolling Stones, Primal Scream, and many more.
From 2007 to 2010, Luther Dickinson joined The Black Crowes as lead guitarist, and he features on three of their albums.
NMA’s first release, Shake Hands With Shorty, was nominated for a Grammy award for ‘Best Contemporary Blues Album’. 51 Phantom and Electric Blue Watermelon have also received nominations in the same category.
Their latest record, Up and Rolling, features characteristic New Orleans rhythms, delicate gospel tracks, blues-funk sounds, and other styles. The result is modern Mississippi music, inspired by tradition but clearly looking towards the future.
