MIKEL RENTERIA & THE WALK ON PROJECT BAND
Bilbao - 2010
Mikel Renteria & The Walk On Project Band was formed in Bilbao in 2010 as the result of one of his children being diagnosed with a serious neurodegenerative disease. Walk On was the first song that Mikel composed as a promise to his son that they would always be there for him. That song, which was the first of many, also led to the Walk On Project (WOP) movement that he set up with his family to fight against those diseases and would also be the name of the band that performed with him on his records and at concerts.
They have just launched “VIDA”, their fourth album and where they only perform song in Spanish, in contrast to earlier works where Mikel alternated Spanish and English in his lyrics. The album has been critically acclaimed and is considered to be an important leap forward for the band. They worked with musicians of the ilk of Steve Wynn (The Dream Syndicate), Mark Olson (Jayhawks), Linda Pitmon (Golden Smog), Gari (ex Hertzainak), Ariel Rot, Aurora Beltrán (Tahúres Zurdos), Mariano Casanova (Distrito 14), Borja Barrueta (Jorge Drexler on drums among others), Ricky Andrade (Inquilino Comunista), Jason Victor (Alejandro Escovedo and others) or Little Fish on their previous albums.
On VIDA, Mikel has put his band, whose members are Álex Iturbe, Xabier Madina, Gorka García and Rubén Fernández, in the spotlight both in the recording and in the tour to launch the album. Music critics find influences of Neil Young, Petty, Lou Reed, Dream Syndicate, Smeethereens, Jayhawks or Lapido in the band’s albums, which have been widely acclaimed by the music sector, that stresses the quality of the numbers, their authenticity and the value of highly emotive and deep lyrics.
