Blue Öyster Cult (exclusive show in Spain)

New York - 1967

Formed in 1967 in Long Island, New York, Blue Öyster Cult (BÖC) has been one of the most influential hard rock bands, blending progressive rock with enigmatic and thought-provoking lyrics. Their music has transcended generations, cementing them as a genre-defining act thanks to their creativity and unmistakable sound. With over 25 million records sold worldwide, they have left an indelible mark on rock history with powerful albums filled with classic songs.

The band originally started under the name Soft White Underbelly, but in 1971, they adopted the name Blue Öyster Cult, inspired by the mythology created by their manager, Sandy Pearlman. Their self-titled debut album was released in 1972, followed by iconic records such as Tyranny and Mutation (1973) and Secret Treaties (1974). However, it was in 1976, with Agents of Fortune, that they achieved mainstream success thanks to “(Don’t Fear) The Reaper”, a song that became a rock anthem and has been featured in countless films and TV series.

Over the years, they have released major hits that have defined hard rock and progressive rock, including:

  • “(Don’t Fear) The Reaper” (Agents of Fortune, 1976)
  • “Godzilla” (Spectres, 1977)
  • “Burnin’ for You” (Fire of Unknown Origin, 1981)
  • “Cities on Flame with Rock and Roll”, “Astronomy”, “Veteran of the Psychic Wars”, “Black Blade”, among others.

The band has collaborated with renowned lyricists and artists, including Patti Smith, who co-wrote “The Revenge of Vera Gemini”, and music critic Richard Meltzer. Additionally, the literary influence of Sandy Pearlman helped shape BÖC’s lyrical universe, filled with occult and science fiction references.

The group is often cited as a major influence by bands such as Metallica, and BÖC was included in VH1’s countdown of the greatest hard rock bands of all time.

Despite the evolution of the music industry and the emergence of new trends, Blue Öyster Cult has remained relevant. After almost two decades without new studio material, they surprised fans in 2020 with The Symbol Remains, an album that reaffirmed their creative power and influence in the genre. In April 2024, they released Ghost Stories, their sixteenth studio album, which includes previously unreleased recordings from 1978 to 2016, as well as covers of classics like “Kick Out the Jams” by MC5 and “We Gotta Get Out of This Place” by The Animals. BÖC has always maintained a relentless touring schedule.

The current BÖC line-up combines the experience of its original members with new talents who have revitalised their sound:

  • Eric Bloom (vocals and rhythm guitar) – A member since the 1970s, whose stage presence and passion for science fiction have defined the band’s identity.
  • Donald “Buck Dharma” Roeser (lead guitar and vocals) – Composer of anthems like “(Don’t Fear) The Reaper”, his virtuosity has been key to the band’s legacy.
  • Danny Miranda (bass) – With experience in projects such as Queen + Paul Rodgers and Meat Loaf.
  • Richie Castellano (guitar and keyboards) – A multi-instrumentalist who has brought a fresh dynamic to the band’s sound.
  • Jules Radino (drums, since 2004) – Ensuring BÖC’s signature rhythmic power.

The band remains true to its essence, continuing to tour extensively and capturing the energy of a multi-generational audience. With over 50 years of history, Blue Öyster Cult continues to prove why they are one of the greatest rock legends.

“We realised that we are a classic rock band. That’s what we are, what we do best, and what we know how to do.” – Blue Öyster Cult.
